Gardening for the Seasons: Fall

Posted by Melissa Ozawa

Winter is an etching, spring a watercolor, summer an oil painting and autumn a mosaic of them all.” Stanley Horowitz

Guest blogger Helen Yoest reflects on her garden during the four seasons. Here is her final post on fall:

Fall
As I journey through my late fall garden, the air is dry, resulting in intense color. Reds are redder, yellows yellower, and late blooming plants show their brightest and most fragrant blooms in the cooler afternoons. There is still much to enjoy.

Grasses have peaked providing texture to the landscape, food and hiding places for wildlife, and next year’s nesting material. Asters assist honeybees in providing a protein source, and goldenrod will gild the lily. Why not go out with a colorful, exuberant bang?

Fall gardening does not need to be about getting ready for winter. It can also be about what is available now. In the wise words of garden writer Elizabeth Lawrence, “Even if something is left undone, everyone must take time to sit still and watch the leaves turn.”

Enjoy your garden throughout the year. As you plan and plant, include something of interest for all the seasons. There is beauty in each and every one. Enjoy.

Helen Yoest, owner of Gardening With Confidence, is working on her first book to be released later this year. Catch up with Helen at her blog at gardeningwithconfidence.com.

  • Some call it sleep grass but Most call it the TickleMe Plant now as it really does react like its being Tickled when you Tickle It! Search Pet TickleMe Plant to see a fun video and to grow your own.
